Australia’s ambassador for gender equality visits PNG
Ambassador O’Byrne will meet women leaders, civil society organisations, frontline service providers, businesses, young people and government representatives working to improve opportunities and outcomes for women and girls across PNG.
AUSTRALIA’S Ambassador for Gender Equality, Michelle O’Byrne, is visiting Papua New Guinea to strengthen partnerships, advancing women’s leadership, economic empowerment, gender equality and the prevention and response to gender-based violence.
During her visit to Port Moresby, Lae and Mt Hagen, Ambassador O’Byrne will meet women leaders, civil society organisations, frontline service providers, businesses, young people and government representatives working to improve opportunities and outcomes for women and girls across PNG.
The Ambassador will see firsthand how Australia is partnering with Papua New Guinea to support women’s leadership, economic participation and community safety. Her programme includes visits to the Bel isi Case Management Centre, the Women’s Business Resource Centre, women-led businesses and sporting initiatives, and meetings with women’s rights advocates, frontline responders and political leaders championing gender equality and women’s empowerment.
The Ambassador will also attend PNG Hunters fixtures and AFL PNG training programmes, engaging with athletes, coaches and sporting organisations that are promoting positive social change, leadership opportunities for women and girls, and greater gender equality through sport.
Ambassador O’Byrne said: "Papua New Guinea is home to extraordinary women and organisations driving change in their communities every day.
“This visit is an opportunity to hear directly from women leaders and political champions, frontline workers and young people about the opportunities and challenges they face, and to strengthen Australia’s partnership with Papua New Guinea to advance gender equality.”
