Australian volunteers partner with PNG organisations to support local development
FOUR Australian volunteers have arrived in Papua New Guinea to share skills and work alongside local organisations supporting communities in Port Moresby, Goroka and Buka.
The volunteers, part of the Australian Volunteers Programme, will be based in Port Moresby, Goroka and Buka, partnering with Papua New Guinean organisations in emergency services, organisational development, finance and communications.
The Australian Volunteers Programme is an Australian Government initiative that matches skilled Australians with partner organisations across the Pacific, Asia and Africa to support locally led development priorities.
Australian High Commission representatives welcomed the volunteers, highlighting the long-standing partnership between Australia and Papua New Guinea and the role volunteers play in sharing skills, strengthening local capability and supporting sustainable development.
Arlene Corfield has joined CARE International PNG in Goroka as a volunteer Grants Finance Mentor. Ms Corfield will support CARE to strengthen grant management systems, including donor fund tracking, budget monitoring and financial reporting.
Ms Kate Newsome has also joined CARE International PNG in Goroka as a volunteer communications and social media mentor. Ms Newsome will provide training in multimedia content creation, storytelling and social media management, helping CARE PNG strengthen its ability to communicate community impact and engage audiences effectively.
Peter McLean is volunteering with St John Ambulance PNG in Port Moresby as a volunteer people and culture systems mentor. He will support recruitment, onboarding, performance management, learning and development, workplace health and safety, industrial relations and volunteer workforce management.
In Buka, Jane Hawtin will join the Haku Women's Collective Association as a volunteer organisational development and compliance support mentor.
Ms Hawtin and colleagues will strengthen internal controls, improve organisational compliance and enhance accountability in program implementation. Together, they will support Haku Women's Collective’s work to address social issues and promote inclusive, community-driven development.
The Australian Government supports partnerships that enable Papua New Guinean organisations to deliver sustainable development outcomes across Papua New Guinea.
