Boxing Team needs 14K to get to Glasgow

The Papua New Guinea Boxing Union has raised serious concerns over the lack of financial support for the national boxing team to the upcoming Glasgow Commonwealth Games. PNG Boxing Union President Dr. Gideon Kendino said the team has been put at a disadvantage. Dr. Kendino said athletes are being asked to contribute to the travel, while officials travel without paying.

“It is very unfair that our athletes have to pay to represent their country while 12 general team officials and Olympic Committee officials travel for free,” Dr Kendino said. “There has been money raised through golf challenges, the Trukai Fun Run and corporate sponsors, yet unemployed boxers are still being asked to find K2,000 each.”

He said the union is now struggling to pay the K14,000 levy fee for its seven-member team.

Dr. Kendino said the team remains committed to representing Papua New Guinea. Their hope is on sponsors and supporters to come forward and help the boxers realise their Commonwealth Games dreams.

“We hope to settle this once we receive support,” he said.

The PNG boxing team to Glasgow will be led by coach Mark-John Keto and manager Leonie Madgwick. The squad includes Bid Michael Inioino (60kg), James Paul (65kg), Kua Mua-Gunua (80kg), Petronella Nokenoke (60kg) and Flora Loga (65kg).
