CONCERNS RAISED OVER NID CARD DELAYS IMPACTING EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR RURAL YOUTH

Concerns have been raised over ongoing delays in the issuance of National Identity (NID) cards, with reports indicating that thousands of Papua New Guineans, particularly those living in rural communities, remain undocumented and unable to access essential services and employment opportunities.

The shortage and delayed processing of NID cards have become a significant challenge for many young Papua New Guineans seeking formal employment, as the NID card remains a key requirement for job applications, banking services, education enrolment, and access to government programs.

Leaders have called for urgent action to address the backlog and improve the efficiency of the national identification system, highlighting the growing frustration among rural communities where access to registration services remains limited.

It has been noted that many youths are missing out on employment opportunities because they are unable to obtain the necessary identification documents required by employers and government agencies.

Stakeholders are urging the relevant authorities to strengthen registration efforts in rural districts, increase public awareness, and deploy additional resources to ensure all eligible citizens are properly registered and issued with NID cards in a timely manner.

The National Identification system plays a critical role in supporting economic participation, improving service delivery, and strengthening governance by providing citizens with a recognized form of identification.

Calls have been made for a comprehensive review of current registration processes to ensure no Papua New Guinean is left behind, particularly young people seeking to enter the workforce and contribute to the nation's development.
