AUSTRALIA is working the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to support the next generation of Papua New Guinean health sector leaders.

Fifteen senior health workers recently graduated after completing seven weeks of residential training in health executive leadership.

This programme is part of the Australian Government supported Health Executive Leadership Development Programme (HELDP) under the long-running and highly successful Health Services Sector Development Project (HSSDP), which is also building critical health infrastructure across PNG.

The latest group to graduate, comprising eight men and seven women representing various provincial health authorities and the Catholic Health Services, undertook the training programme with support from the University of PNG and the Divine Word University.

The recent graduation brings a total of 125 participants who have successfully completed this health executive leadership programme since its inception in 2023.

In his keynote address, the Minister for Health, Elias Kapavore, challenged the participants to be innovative in their approach and to identify and help address issues currently affecting the health system.

The HELDP programme provides a combination of executive management training, professional mentoring, and experiential learning that is tailored to the PNG context, making it a highly regarded programme within government.

This final cohort of participants was fully funded by their nominating institutions, a strong testament to the value of the programme.

The participants have embarked on a two-week international study tour as part of the final stage of their training.
