Hoskins airport upgrade 57pc complete
THE National Airports Corporation (NAC) advises the airline operators, business community and all stakeholders that Hoskins Airport Upgrade Project in West New Britain Province is 57 per cent complete and progressing for both the airside and landside works.
The contractor has recently completed airside works on the planned MOWP Stages 1 to 7, awaiting approval to commence Stage 8. Due to new physical characteristics of the Aerodrome, and as part of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority of Papua New Guinea’s (CASA PNG) regulation, the completed works has to be inspected, certified and commissioned prior to use.
Hence, works under MOWP Stage 8 are scheduled to start on June 23,
2026, subject to approval by CASA PNG. The commencement of Stage 8 will provide an available runway length of 1,090 metres, which is suitable for operations by DHC-8-300, ATR-42, and smaller aircraft types only.
As the runway works progress, larger aircraft will gradually be able to use the airport. Upon completion of the rehabilitation works, the airport will be capable of accommodating modern jet aircraft such as the Airbus A220, improving connectivity, passenger capacity, and the reliability of air services, subject to airline operational requirements and regulatory approvals.
Subject to favourable weather conditions, the runway works are scheduled for completion by the 2026 festive season. Any changes to the construction programme or operational restrictions will be communicated accordingly.
These significant upgrade works are necessary to maintain safety, security, reliability and efficiency of services at the airport.
NAC apologises for any inconvenience these temporary restrictions may cause, and thanks the traveling public, airline operators, business community and the people of West New Britain and PNG for their patience and cooperation as it progresses on with the upgrade works at airport.
The Hoskins Airport Upgrade project is implemented by NAC under the Civil Aviation Development Investment Project II (CADIP II) and is funded by the Government of Papua New Guinea and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
