New classroom brings learning closer to home for South Fly students

STUDENTS in Sigabaduru, South Fly District, Western Province, and surrounding communities will no longer need to leave home to continue their education following the construction of a new double classroom at Sigabaduru Primary School.

Built through the PNG-Australia Partnership's Community Grants Scheme, the new facility will enable the school to accommodate Grade 7 and 8 students locally, reducing the need for children to travel long distances to continue their studies.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Project Management Committee member Noel Sam said the new classroom was an example of partnership in action.

“This double classroom is a direct result of the strong partnership and mutual respect between the Governments of Australia and Papua New Guinea, the Fly River Provincial Government, and the Forecoast Local Level Government,” he said.

Primary School Standards Inspector for South Fly District, Douglas Haoda, said the facility would improve access to education for students across the area.

“Grade 7 and 8 students from Sigabaduru and neighbouring communities will no longer need to travel to Mabudawan or Daru to continue their studies,” he said.

“This new classroom is a significant step towards helping the district achieve its 1-6-6 education policy objectives.”

The project was delivered following a successful community grant application and highlights the impact of strong local leadership, effective coordination, and community-driven development. Its successful completion demonstrates what can be achieved when communities, government and development partners work together to address local priorities.

The Fly River Provincial Government and the community also contributed the required 10 per cent counterpart funding, demonstrating strong local ownership of the project.

Through the PNG-Australia Partnership, Australia is supporting sustainable development and improving access to quality services across Papua New Guinea. The new classroom will expand educational opportunities, ease pressure on existing facilities, and provide students with a better environment in which to learn and succeed.
