PNG Chamber of Resource and Energy has said that the highlight for day one of the PNG Resources Week was a powerful presentation by Sovereign Wealth Fund (SWF) chief technical advisor Ian Tarutia, who highlighted the SWF as a vital "superannuation fund for the nation" to secure long-term economic independence.

Under the government's "Reset @50" agenda, momentum was building to operationalise this game-changing fund before the 2027 election to protect Papua New Guinea's financial future.

"The operationalisation of the SWF is the game-changer PNG needs. It is not just a financial tool; it is our bridge to long-term economic independence," Tarutia said.

Also at the PNG Resources Week 2026, held from July 13-16, new Porgera Limited (NPL) was proud to be part of the important conversations happening at the event.

Karo Maha, NPL country manager and Chair of CORE's Women in Resources and Energy Committee, launched the Chamber's Gender Equality & Social Inclusion Policy.

Freida River Limited had a successful first day at the PNG Resources Week.

Its mining booth welcomed strong engagement from attendees, with many visitors stopping by to learn more about Frieda River Limited and the Sepik Development Project. The most frequently asked questions were: Who is FRL? and What is the Frieda River Project all about?

The company appreciated the opportunity to connect with industry colleagues and stakeholders, sharing how FRL is working to create long-term value through responsible development, community partnerships, environmental stewardship and local participation.

A highlight of the day was project Director Philip McCormack's presentation during Session 3B: Security in Resources, where he spoke on "Protecting the Sepik: Building Trust Through a No Riverine Disposal Commitment."

Phil highlighted how modern resource project security extends beyond physical assets to include environmental stewardship, community trust and social licence, and how FRL's commitment to protecting the Sepik River ecosystem contributes to long-term project resilience and stakeholder confidence.

Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (DHERST) used the event to highlight people that help to strengthen TVET in Papua New Guinea.

DHERST Secretary Lonnie Baki explained how TVET reform was strengthening quality, expanding opportunities for students and ensuring training better meet the needs of industry.

"One of the biggest misconceptions about TVET in Papua New Guinea is that it is a second choice for school leavers. In fact, TVET is just as important as university," Baki said.

TISA Bank was excited to be part of the PNG Resources Week, connecting and joining important conversations on how the country's resource sector was driving development and nation-building.

As the major sponsor of this year's event, TISA was pleased to invest in this event that had brought together key decision makers, landowner groups, government agencies, developers and partners.
