RTA gives 20mill to PNG Roads Fund

The Road Traffic Authority (RTA) presented a K20 million cheque to the PNG Roads Fund Board yesterday, the first contribution of its kind since the its establishment under the Road Traffic Act 2014.

RTA Chairman Dominic Kaumu presented the cheque to PNG Road Fund Board Chairman and Secretary for the Department Finance, Samuel Penias. He said the K20 million reflects the significant financial turnaround achieved by the authority over the past eighteen months in its core functions of vehicle registrations, driver licensing, enforcement with stakeholders, including the Motor Vehicle Insurance Limited.

“Today is more than the presentation of a cheque,” said Mr Kaumu. “It is a demonstration that good governance, prudent financial management and strong leadership can deliver tangible benefits for our nation.”

Following the appointment of the Acting Chief Executive Officer in November 2024, RTA introduced stronger financial controls, improved revenue collection systems and enhanced operational efficiency.

These reforms resulted in record financial performance, including total revenue of K31.723 million, an operating surplus of K12.657 million, and cash reserves increasing to K26.52 million by 30 June 2026.

Mr Kaumu said these achievements demonstrate that the authority has matured into a financially sustainable institution capable of supporting the Government’s broader transport and infrastructure agenda.

“The contribution to the PNG Roads Fund is ultimately an investment in safer roads, stronger transport infrastructure and improved services for all Papua New Guineans,” he said.

The Chairman said RTA remains committed to ensuring that every kina collected from road users is managed responsibly and reinvested to improve road transport safety and regulatory services throughout the country.

Looking ahead, RTA will continue to prioritise:

• Strengthening road safety programmes nationwide;

• Expanding enforcement and regulatory compliance;

• Accelerating digital transformation and online services;

• Modernising vehicle registration and driver licensing systems;

• Supporting heavy vehicle compliance to protect national road infrastructure; and

• Improving customer service delivery across Papua New Guinea.
