Seven dead, 82 missing in Indonesia landslide

Seven people have died and 82 people are missing after a landslide in Indonesia, the nation's disaster mitigation agency has said.

It happened in a village in the West Bandung region of Indonesia's West Java province, according to agency spokesperson Abdul Muhari.

"The number of missing persons is high; we will try to optimise our search and rescue efforts today," Mr Muhari said.

Indonesia's weather agency had previously warned of extreme weather, including downpours in West Java province for a week from Friday, local outlet Kompas.com reported.

Saturday's tragedy comes after deadly landslides and flooding left more than 1,170 people dead across Indonesia's Aceh, North Sumatra and West Sumatra provinces in December.

It is also the second major landslide to hit Java in just over two months, after 11 people were killed at Cibeunying village on November 13 following days of heavy rain.

Jakarta, Indonesia's capital, which is also on the island of Java, has witnessed a wet start to 2026.

Some 189 millimetres fell on Friday, with 267mm recorded the previous week on January 18.
