U.S. Embassy hosts pre-departure orientation for 30 STEM scholars
THE U.S. Embassy and Papua New Guinea Department of Education hosted a pre-departure orientation Aug. 4 and 5 for 30 students who are traveling to study science, technology, engineering, and math in the United States.
The 2026 PNG STEM Scholarship Programme is funding the students’ studies at American higher education institutions, to include South Dakota State University, North Dakota State University, South Dakota Mines, University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Northern Iowa, and the University of Houston, Texas.
“You will be learning in the same classrooms, laboratories, and research environments that have produced world-changing discoveries,” said Andy Covington, Chargé d’Affaires a.i., U.S. Embassy, Port Moresby.
“I encourage you to seize every opportunity to contribute your own ideas, because the next breakthrough could come from one of you.”
The principal sponsor of the 2026 STEM Scholarship Program is Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited. The orientation provided students with practical information to help them succeed in an American university setting, as well as student visa guidance, and an introduction to the Essay Writing Resource Centre, an online tool to help students improve their essay writing skills.
The U.S. Embassy extends a hearty congratulations to all students who are embarking on this new adventure, and wishes them well in their future studies.
